The Barbados cherry, also known as acerola (Malpighia emarginata), is a tropical shrub or small tree prized for its bright red, cherry-like fruits that are packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients. Native to the Caribbean and Central and South America, the Barbados cherry thrives in warm climates and can be grown in containers in cooler areas. Its fruits have a juicy, tart flavor that’s ideal for fresh eating, juicing, or making into jams and jellies. The plant also produces small, delicate pink flowers that attract pollinators, making it an attractive and beneficial addition to any garden or landscape

Care:

  • Sunlight: Barbados cherry thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily to produce abundant fruit. It can tolerate partial shade but may yield fewer flowers and fruits.

  • Soil: It prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. Sandy or loamy soils are ideal. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, as they can lead to root rot.

  • Watering: Water young plants regularly to establish a strong root system, but avoid overwatering. Once mature, Barbados cherry is drought-tolerant and can handle brief dry periods. Deep watering once a week is usually sufficient, although more frequent watering may be necessary in dry, hot climates or during fruiting.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) every 2-3 months during the growing season to support healthy growth and fruit production. Organic compost or well-rotted manure also works well.

  • Pruning: Prune Barbados cherry after fruiting to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Remove any dead or diseased branches to improve airflow and reduce the risk of pests.

  • Pests and Diseases: This plant is relatively resistant but may face issues with aphids, spider mites, or scale insects. Neem oil or insecticidal soap can help manage these. Root rot and mildew can occur in overly damp conditions, so good drainage is essential.

  • Temperature and Humidity: Ideal for USDA zones 9-11, Barbados cherry prefers warm, humid climates and can tolerate brief, mild frosts but may suffer in prolonged cold. Protect it during freezes by covering it or moving potted plants indoors.

  • Harvesting: The cherries are ready to harvest when they turn bright red, usually 3-4 weeks after flowering. They are highly perishable, so it’s best to pick and use them promptly.
