Epipremnum aureum 'Shangri La' is a captivating cultivar of the popular pothos plant, known for its unique and compact growth habit. Unlike traditional pothos, which has long trailing vines, 'Shangri La' features tightly curled, twisted, and rounded leaves that form a dense, bushy appearance. The leaves are typically vibrant green with variegated yellow or golden streaks, creating an eye-catching contrast. This variety is slower-growing than other pothos and is well-suited for smaller spaces, making it an excellent choice for tabletops or as a decorative accent. Easy to care for, it thrives in bright, indirect light, moderate humidity, and well-draining soil, and it can be easily propagated from cuttings.
1. Light
- Bright, indirect light is ideal for this variety to maintain its vibrant leaf variegation. While it can tolerate low light conditions, the leaves may lose some of their striking colors and grow more slowly. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves.
2. Watering
- Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Epipremnum aureum 'Shangri La' is somewhat drought-tolerant, but consistent watering will promote healthy growth. Be sure to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Ensure that the pot has proper drainage to prevent standing water.
3. Humidity
- This plant prefers moderate to high humidity. While it can adapt to average indoor humidity levels, it will thrive with higher humidity. If you live in a dry climate, consider using a humidifier, placing the plant on a humidity tray, or occasionally misting the leaves to maintain moisture.
4. Soil
- Well-draining soil is essential. A general houseplant mix with added perlite or sand will work well, ensuring proper drainage to avoid waterlogged roots. The plant doesn't require overly rich soil but benefits from a mix that allows the roots to breathe.
5. Temperature
- Epipremnum aureum 'Shangri La' prefers temperatures between 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C). Keep it in a warm area, avoiding exposure to temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is sensitive to the cold.
6. Fertilizing
- Feed your plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer), about once a month. Reduce fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant is in a dormant state.
7. Pruning
- Prune the plant occasionally to maintain its shape and encourage fuller growth. Since 'Shangri La' is a compact variety, regular pruning will help it maintain its bushy appearance and prevent it from becoming too leggy.
8. Repotting
- Repot every 1-2 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is just slightly larger than the current one to avoid waterlogging, and refresh the soil with a well-draining mix to give the plant room to grow.
9. Propagation
- Epipremnum aureum 'Shangri La' is easy to propagate through stem cuttings. Simply cut a healthy section with a node, let it callus over for a few hours, and place it in water or directly into soil. Once roots develop, it can be transplanted into a pot.
