Euphorbia lactea, commonly known as Dragon Bone, is a striking and unique succulent plant native to tropical Asia. Known for its distinctive forked, tree-like appearance, Dragon Bone features branched stems that are green to bluish-green with a waxy coating. The stems are often deeply ridged, resembling bones, which is how the plant got its common name. The plant can grow quite large, with some varieties reaching up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) in height.

This succulent is often sought after for its architectural form, making it a standout in gardens or as a statement piece in indoor plant collections. While it is a member of the Euphorbia family, which includes plants with milky sap, Euphorbia lactea does not produce showy flowers but is instead prized for its striking stems.

Care for Euphorbia lactea 'Dragon Bone':

  1. Light:

    • Dragon Bone thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight. However, in extreme heat or direct midday sun, the plant may develop sunburn or leaf scorch. Ideally, it should be placed in a well-lit area that gets ample light throughout the day.
  2. Watering:

    • As a succulent, Euphorbia lactea prefers a dry environment and should only be watered when the soil is completely dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so make sure to allow the soil to dry out between waterings. In winter, water sparingly as the plant’s growth slows down.
  3. Soil:

    • Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix to prevent water retention and ensure good root health. The plant needs soil that drains quickly to avoid waterlogged roots.
  4. Temperature:

    • This plant prefers warm temperatures between 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C) and should be protected from cold temperatures below 50°F (10°C). It is not frost-tolerant, so it should be kept indoors or in areas where temperatures stay consistently warm.
  5. Humidity:

    • Dragon Bone Euphorbia prefers low to moderate humidity and can thrive in the dry air typical of indoor environments.
  6. Fertilizing:

    • Feed the plant during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Fertilize once a month to encourage healthy growth, but avoid fertilizing during the dormant winter months.
  7. Pruning:

    • Pruning is generally not required unless the plant becomes too large or leggy. You can trim back any overly long branches to maintain its shape. Always wear gloves when handling the plant to avoid contact with its milky, irritating sap.
  8. Repotting:

    • Repotting should be done every 2-3 years, or when the plant outgrows its container. Choose a pot that is just a little larger than the current one, as Euphorbia lactea does not like to be in oversized pots.
