Euphorbia lactea variegata, also known as Variegated Dragon Bone, is a stunning and unique variety of the Euphorbia lactea species, prized for its striking, variegated stems. The plant has the same characteristic tree-like, forked branches as the regular Dragon Bone, but the variegated version features beautiful streaks of white, cream, yellow, or pale green, creating a marbled or striped effect that adds a unique touch to the plant. The combination of the rich green and lighter variegation makes it highly ornamental and a favorite among collectors.

The plant typically grows into a tree-like shape and can reach heights of 3 to 6 feet (1 to 1.8 meters) in ideal conditions. Like other Euphorbia species, the Euphorbia lactea variegated produces a milky, toxic sap, so caution should be taken when handling the plant.

Care for Euphorbia lactea variegata 'Dragon Bone':

  1. Light:

    • This plant thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate some direct sunlight, though too much direct sun may cause the variegation to fade or lead to sunburn. To maintain vibrant colors, provide it with a well-lit spot with plenty of natural light.
  2. Watering:

    • As a succulent, Euphorbia lactea variegata is drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch, but avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Be especially careful during the winter months, as the plant’s growth slows and it requires less water.
  3. Soil:

    • Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix to ensure the roots don't sit in water. The soil should be loose and fast-draining to prevent water retention, which can cause root rot.
  4. Temperature:

    • This variety prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C). It should be kept away from cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is not frost-tolerant.
  5. Humidity:

    • Low to moderate humidity is ideal for this plant, as it thrives in dry to average indoor conditions. Avoid placing it in very humid areas, as this can cause fungal issues.
  6. Fertilizing:

    • During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your Variegated Dragon Bone with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer about once a month to encourage healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing during the dormant winter months.
  7. Pruning:

    • Pruning is not generally necessary unless the plant becomes leggy or overgrown. If needed, trim back any long stems. Always wear gloves when handling, as the plant produces a toxic milky sap that can irritate the skin and eyes.
  8. Repotting:

    • Repot the plant every 2-3 years, or when it outgrows its pot. When repotting, choose a container that is just slightly larger than the current one, and use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
  9. Propagation:

    • Euphorbia lactea variegata can be propagated by stem cuttings. Wear gloves and allow the cut end to callus over for a day or two before planting in well-draining soil to avoid infection.
